Ordering Instructions: Please Read Carefully
In a single email submission, please include the following items for processing, using Hero Name as the subject: Current application, Photo, DD214/Discharge Paperwork, Bio. We ask that all orders be emailed to us.
Digital Photo: Please provide a high-resolution scan of a photo showing the hero in uniform. All photos will be used as sent. Please avoid taking a photo of a photo with a cell phone. Atlas Printing and Laurel Quick Print can help scan photos.
Application Form: Ensure all fields are completed accurately. Especially the years of service, formatted as dates (ie.1942-1948) and matching the discharge paperwork. If you feel that dates of service are different than what is listed on the discharge paperwork please note that.
DD214 Discharge Paperwork: This is required for verification of dates, rank, and medals. Any alternate discharge paperwork is also acceptable. We understand that some do not have discharge paperwork. We do ask that you make every effort to obtain it. If you have not had any luck, we can try to obtain it for you as a last resort.
For KIA/POW/MIA proof of status is required to obtain a free banner.
Bio (Typed into Body of Email to allow us to copy and paste): Include a brief bio of the hero, which must consist of Name, Rank, Date of Service, Branch, and any additional anecdotes or details you wish to share. This bio will be used on our website and Facebook pages. Feel free to tell short stories.
Please consolidate all information into a single email to somersethometownhero@gmail.com. Avoid sending multiple emails for one hero. One hero per email.
Payment: The cost per banner is $300, payable to Somerset Hometown Hero Project. Payment should be mailed, along with a copy of the emailed documents, to 109 E. Main St, Somerset, PA 15501. KIA/POW/MIA are no charge. Orders placed on line with a card do include processing fees.
Additional Information: - Photos should ideally be lifelike and in uniform. Please avoid photos with multiple people or helmets. Exceptions have been made for deceased with no uniform photo. We simply ask that every effort is made to find a photo in uniform.
In-person applications require an appointment; walk-ins are not accepted. To schedule an appointment, use the scheduling tab on the website.

Heroes will be featured on our website and Facebook page. We will upload as volunteer time permits.
Orders for banners will be processed annually, with the next order scheduled for spring 2025. Missed the 2025 order? The next opportunity will be in 2026. Thank you for honoring our heroes with us.
We are asking for donations to offset the cost of free banners and Insurance. All donations are tax deductible.
We are also seeking volunteers to assist with various aspects of the project. Help needed: Uploading photos and bios to website, Installing and taking down banners, cleaning banners for storage, fundraising. If you are interested in helping, please reach out to us.
Banners will hang from approximately Armed Forces Day (May) through September 11. Hanging times will depend on volunteer schedules.
Location is not guaranteed. We do our best to hang families together.
